Surface Dressing

Seal the surface, restore the grip

Surface dressing, often called tar and chip, seals a worn but structurally sound surface. A binder is sprayed over the area and stone chippings are spread and rolled into it, which keeps water out of the surface, restores grip and gives a natural stone finish.

It suits long drives, farm and estate lanes, private roads and tracks, where the base is still doing its job but the top has started to wear or let water in. Treated at that point, the surface lasts far longer than if it is left until it breaks up.

Pricing

What affects the cost of surface dressing

Surface dressing is priced on the area and the state of what is there now. The main factors are:

  • How much repair the existing surface needs first
  • The chipping size and colour you choose
  • Access for spraying and rolling equipment
  • Whether one or two coats are needed

FAQs

Common questions about surface dressing

What is the difference between surface dressing and tarmac?

Tarmac is a new layer of asphalt laid and rolled to a set thickness. Surface dressing is a treatment for an existing, sound surface: a binder with stone chippings rolled into it. It seals and adds grip rather than rebuilding the surface.

Will there be loose chippings afterwards?

Some loose stone is normal for the first few weeks while the chippings bed in under traffic. We sweep off the excess once it has settled, and it helps to drive slowly on the surface for a while.

Can surface dressing go over a broken surface?

Not on its own. Dressing seals a surface but does not add strength, so potholes and failed patches need repairing first. If the base has failed across the whole area, resurfacing is the better answer.

What time of year is best for surface dressing?

It works best in warm, dry weather, when the binder takes to the surface properly. We plan dressing work for the drier months where we can.
