Driveways

A driveway built from the ground up

Your driveway takes the weight of every car, van and delivery that pulls onto it, so the way it is built matters more than the finish on top. We lay tarmac driveways across South Yorkshire on a base dug and compacted for your ground, with edging that keeps the surface tight and falls that shed water.

Most failed drives we are asked to look at share the same story: a thin layer of surface rolled over soft ground. The dip by the gate and the crumbling edge come from what is underneath. That is where most of the work, and most of our attention, goes.

What's included

What our driveways service covers

The work that goes into the job, set out in your written quote.

  • A visit to measure up, check levels and talk through how the drive is used
  • Removal of the old surface and excavation to the depth your ground needs
  • A compacted stone sub-base, laid and rolled in layers
  • Edging set in concrete to hold the surface and give a clean line
  • Falls planned towards drainage so water runs off the drive
  • Base and wearing courses of tarmac, laid hot and rolled
  • Waste taken away and the site left swept and tidy

The process

How we carry out driveways

From the first look at the ground to the final sweep, this is how the job runs.

We check the area, the levels and where water goes, then agree the layout with you.

  2. 2

    Step 2 of 4

    Dig out

The old surface comes up and we excavate down to firm ground.

  3. 3

    Step 3 of 4

    Build the base

Stone is laid and compacted in layers, and the edging is set.

  4. 4

    Step 4 of 4

    Surface and finish

Tarmac goes down hot, is rolled smooth and the site is cleared.

Pricing

What affects the cost of driveways

Every drive is different, so we price yours on what it actually needs. The main things that move the cost are:

  • The size and shape of the area
  • How much digging out and removal the old surface needs
  • The ground conditions and the depth of sub-base required
  • Edging, kerbs and any drainage channels
  • Access for machinery and deliveries

FAQs

Common questions about driveways

How long does a new tarmac driveway take?

Most domestic drives take a few days from dig-out to the final roll. The size of the area, the ground and the weather all play a part, and we give you a realistic timescale with your quote.

When can I drive on my new tarmac?

Fresh tarmac stays soft for a while after it is laid, especially in warm weather. We will tell you when it is safe to walk and park on, and it is worth avoiding sharp turns on the spot with the steering wheel for the first few weeks.

Can you lay new tarmac over my old drive?

Sometimes, if the existing base is sound and the levels allow it. If the old drive has sunk, cracked right through or holds water, overlaying it just hides the problem, so we will tell you honestly which option makes sense.

Do I need planning permission for a new driveway?

For a front garden over five square metres, the surface generally needs to be permeable or drain onto your own land rather than the road, otherwise planning permission may be needed. We plan the drainage with that in mind and your local council can confirm the rules for your property.

Do you need a dropped kerb to access the drive?

If you are creating a new vehicle access from the road, the council usually needs to approve a dropped kerb first. Check with your local highways team before work starts.
